    Golden Girl

Hi APC! My name is Oumy Souané and I’m a college student based in NYC. Below are a few of my favorite writing pieces! Enjoy! My Father My father. The man that separated me from my body, and my body from me, and left me to glue all the broken pieces together. But don’t you worry, it got done.  My heart. For a very long time, has felt empty. Blood flowed through it, but it was tainted. It had strings and coils and feelings of hatred, love, anger, and of being insufficient laced with it, all from the man who was supposed to protect me and love me unconditionally. My Maman has always been there for…

    For the Ancestors

Hi! My name is Hema Patel. I was born in Arizona but spent my childhood on two Reservations: the Turtle Mountain Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota and the Sisseton Wahpeton Reservation of South and North Dakota. Now, I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota! (Note: The cover photo is taken by Adam Sings in the Timber) My submission is a collection of photos, words, and art pieces that symbolize my journey to embrace my heritage and identity. They also symbolize the ways in which I try to honor my ancestors, through Ojibwe beadwork and Classical Indian Dance, Bharatanatyam. I hope my ancestors are proud of my work to honor our cultures. Part…

    Speak Up

Hey APC! I’m Ray, a 22-year-old “Manifinesser” hell-bent on dreaming, cultivating and building a world where those who look like me can belong.  However, this 22-year journey of figuring out who “Ray” is was no easy feat. I use “Ray” as a way to describe my inner voice that is truly an extension of myself. You see, like so many of you, I too grew up within predominantly white spaces. In these spaces I found myself hiding. Shrinking. Silent. Diluting. Too afraid to be seen or heard because the status quo made it clear that my presence was just for appearances. So I played my part, stayed inside the lines,…

    Life on Film

Hey! I’m Claire, a 19-year-old Design student from California. Art has always played a huge role in my life. Like many, I started taking studio classes at a young age and continued on. But over time, it grew to feel like a task. I felt less and less creative as I went to weekly art classes and fell into a routine of painting and sketching the same things. It wasn’t until I first experienced film developing and darkroom technique in 2015 that my work became personal and passionate. Film is so different from the other mediums I have used. It’s not just an SD card or an automatic click. It’s…

    Lens and Keys

Hey APC!! My name is Alexis Chang, and I am a 17-year-old musician, producer, and photographer. I am multiracial; my dad is ¾ Jamaican and ¼ Chinese, and my mom is full Korean. I was born in New York, and am currently based in New Haven, Connecticut. Along with music production, I am currently exploring photography and cinematography, with a focus on portraying aspects of movement through modeling, as well as acting. I create art because, to me, it is an emotional outlet, and I love the idea of being able to bring a vision or sound I have in my head into real life. I hope my art can…

A Letter for Sulli and Goo Hara

Hey APC, it’s Esther Park. I started writing this a few days after Sulli’s passing, and now with the saddening news of her friend, Goo Hara’s death, I thought it would be timely to finally share my thoughts on the subject.  Sulli, a member of the K-pop group f(x) was found dead in her home on October 14th. This was a young woman of 25 who had been facing online bullying and harassment for a good part of the last decade. When she was photographed with her older boyfriend, they said she was not dedicated to her music and her fans, promiscuous and troublesome. When she uploaded braless pictures, they…
